Psychologists have found that women who are ovulating have a strong attraction to the opposite sex. For heterosexuals who already have a stable partner, they are more intentional about resisting these temptations.
Men with stable partners have better fixation
Researchers spent several months coaching a 21-year-old ovulating woman not to flirt with any male subjects who entered the lab. She kept eye contact with the subjects and reduced conversational communication to a minimum. She did not use any makeup or perfume, kept her hair in the simplest of ponytails, and always wore casual jeans and plain T-shirts. All the boys in the experiment thought she was just a research assistant for the experiment at Florida State University, but the real experiment was yet to come. Each male was asked to rate the woman’s attractiveness. The experiment found that if any of the boys were in a relationship with another girl, those men would give the attractive woman in the experiment a relatively low attractiveness score. This was partly because they sensed a potential threat to their own previous long-term relationships with this woman. To avoid temptation, giving her a lower score was telling themselves that this woman wasn’t that hot.
This experiment is a new trend in the study of “relationship maintenance” in developmental psychology. Earlier research emphasized how our dating and mating behaviors are predetermined. How men and women chose their partners by their looks, size, social status, and resources. But now, the gender dating game is no longer just about looks, and natural selection is more inclined to choose partners who will stay together long enough to raise offspring. By making their partners happy, men and women are able to sustain longer-term intimate relationships. They benefit from the virtue of remaining faithful, or at least appearing to be faithful. It does seem that men struggle to resist the temptation from ovulating women,” said Dr. Joe Mayne, a psychologist at Florida State University, one of the study’s main leaders. They try to make themselves think she’s repulsive. Others may feel like they are harboring a latent desire to steal the forbidden fruit. Showing the other person’s lack of attractiveness helps them suppress the desire to steal food.”
Ovulatory lap dancers get higher tips
One study found that pole dancers get more tips during ovulation. But when she takes ovulation-suppressing drugs for birth control, her tips are reduced. The smell of a woman’s body allows men to determine if she is ovulating, which evokes an increase in men’s own testosterone levels. Ovulation,” notes University of California psychologist Martin Hazleton, “allows women and men to influence each other. But none of us know exactly what is driving the changes in our behavior during this period. The only thing we know for sure is that we are closer to mammals than we thought.”
Women who are ovulating are more interested in going to parties and dance clubs. They dress up to be more attractive. Some women’s attitudes toward their partners also change. A woman who is in a steady relationship with a man may suddenly start to notice and flirt with other men if her male partner is less sexy and attractive in image,” Dr. Hazleton said. In the days leading up to ovulation, her dissatisfaction and pickiness with her regular boyfriend increases. But this does not mean they will actually cheat. These women don’t falter; they don’t want to leave their regular boyfriend. They just want to look around at other men and consider whether they could be available sexual partners.”
