Whenever a marriage goes wrong, many people blame the man, believing that the man’s philandering caused it to break up, according to the British media. But according to new research from the Karolinska School of Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden, the breakdown of a marriage may also be the result of a gene carried by the woman’s body. A gene called A-allele, the oxytocin receptor gene, can play tricks on women, making them impatient and grumpy about the occasional discordant episode in their marital relationship, thus increasing the divorce rate.
When a woman is in labor and breastfeeding, her body secretes its own oxytocin, a hormone that brings women and their offspring closer together. But if oxytocin is produced abnormally, it can mess with the brain’s ability to deal with relationship problems, giving rise to a “divorce gene” called A-allele. Researchers surveyed 1,800 women and found that those who carried the gene had a 50% higher divorce rate.
